Translation of the Holy Quran by Dr.
Gilani |
Booty - Chapter 8
|
Contains 75 Verses – Medina |
|
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
|
|
1- |
They ask you (O Muhammad) regarding booty (the
spoils of battle).
Say: "The spoils of battle belong to God, and
into the custody of the Messenger."
Therefore fear disobeying
God, mend difficulties and differences between and among
yourselves
and obey God and His Messenger if you are real
believers. |
|
2- |
Indeed the believers are such that when
God is being mentioned,
their hearts and feelings are moved and
tremble and when His Verses are being read to them,
their faith
is increased and strengthened and they always trust in their Lord.
|
|
3- |
Those same people who regularly do prayer and
spend (in charity) from that which We have provided them. |
|
4- |
Those are the true believers.
There are
grades of value and dignity for them by their Lord, as well as
Forgiveness (for their past sins)
and a generous gift of
provisions (especially in Paradise). |
|
5- |
(Their dislike regarding division of spoils, is) similar to their dislike
when your Lord commanded you (Muhammad)
to leave your house (to
go for the defensive battle of Badr and) indeed a party of
believers disliked it also, |
|
6- |
Arguing with you about the right course
of action even though the truth of command was made clear (to them),
as if
they were being driven to death and as if they watching (their
own death). |
|
7- |
And remember when God promised you
(victory over) one of the two parties
(of the idolaters' army,
the one which was armed) that it should be yours (to
tackle),
but you (believers) wished that the other one, unarmed (the caravan of their
supplies) to be yours
(for taking spoils as in the battle of Badr, without tackling the real armed enemy),
meanwhile God
willed that the truth will be realized by His Words
and to cut
off the roots of disbelievers
(like in the battle of Badr, in which
the idolaters came from Mecca to attack Muslims in Medina). |
|
8- |
So that the truth be realized and that the
falsehood will disintegrate and perish,
even though the sinners
and criminals hate this. |
|
9- |
And (remember) when you (Muslims in
difficulty) urgently asked the help of your Lord
and He
responded to you (by saying:)
"I will help you with a thousand
of (invisible forces of) angels, coming in row after row." |
|
10- |
God intended to make it (the help) as a good
news and that your hearts be strengthened and assured by it.
And
there is no victory except by the aid of God,
as truly God is
the All-mighty, All-wise. |
|
11- |
(Remember) when He covered you with inner
calm, as a way of assurance from Him
and also sent down rain
water from the sky to cleanse you with
and to remove the evil
whispering (suggestions of despair) of Satan and to strengthen
your hearts
and to make firm your steps by that.
1 |
|
12- |
(Remember) when your Lord revealed to the
angels:
"Certainly, I am with you, so you encourage and keep firm
those who have believed.
I shall cast great fear in the hearts
of those who have disbelieved and denied the truth,
so strike
over and above their necks (hit their heads) and smite off
(paralyze) all their fingers and toes
(to
disable their aggression). |
|
13- |
That is because they have cut themselves
away from (the Way of) God and His Messenger (by opposing them).
And whoever defies God and His Messenger, (must know that) of course
God is severe in retaliation and punishment. |
|
14- |
(O you disbelievers,) Just taste this
suffering and surely the suffering of Fire (the Hell Fire) will
be for
the disbelievers. |
|
15- |
O you who have believed, whenever you
meet those who disbelieve in a battlefield,
don't ever turn your
backs on them. |
|
16- |
And whoever on such a day, turns his back
on them, unless it be a maneuver of battle
or to join another troop
(of the believers), indeed draws upon himself a
wrath-condemnation from God
and his destination shall be Hell
and it is the worst end station. |
|
|
17- |
It was not (by your own force that) you
killed them, but God killed them
and it was not (by your force
when) you threw (dust into their faces), but God threw (it),
so that God might test and try the believers with a good and suitable
trial (to make them strong), by His Design.
Certainly God is
All-Hearing, All-Knowing. |
|
18- |
This is (the way) and surely God always
weakens the deceitful plans and plots of the disbelievers. |
|
19- |
(O Messenger tell the disbelievers:)
"Even though
you were seeking victory, instead the victory (of
Muslims) indeed came upon you,
and if you stop (the attacks), it will
be better for you and if you return (to hostility and attacks),
so shall we
and your community forces won't be sufficient for
you,
no matter how numerous or more it might be, because God is surely
with the believers." |
|
20- |
O you who believe, obey God and His
Messenger and do not turn away from him, while you are hearing
him. |
|
21- |
And don't be like those who say: "We have
heard.", but in reality they are not listening. |
|
|
22- |
Surely the worst of living creatures in God's
Sight are those (spiritually) deaf and dumb, who do
not use their reason. |
|
23- |
If God knew any good in them, He would
certainly have made them listen,
so even if He makes them listen
(with their apathy), they would turn away, protesting (God's
guidance). |
|
24- |
O you who believe, respond favorably to
God and (His) Messenger,
when he calls you to (the way of life
to) give you (spiritual) life
and know that surely God is ever
intimate between a person and his heart
and that ultimately you
shall all be gathered to Him (on the Day of Judgment). |
|
25- |
And fear the calamity and hardship that
will not hit only the wrong doers among you
(but it will affect
the bad and the good people also) and know that God is Severe in
punishment. 2 |
|
26- |
And remember the time when you (Muslims) were
a few,
weakened in the land and were afraid that people
might kidnap you,
He provided a safe place for you, gave you
strength by His Help and provided you with good things,
so that
you may be grateful. |
|
27- |
O you who believe, do not betray God and
(His) Messenger, nor betray in things entrusted to you and you
know it. |
|
28- |
And know that your possessions and your
children are also means of trial
(do not betray trusts in favor
of your getting rich or for your children),
and that really with
God is a great reward (if you avoid betraying) |
|
29- |
O you who believe, if you become mindful
of God (avoiding what He prohibited),
He will grant you the
power of distinction (between right and wrong)
and He will cover your sins from you and will forgive you and God is the Owner
of Great Grace. |
|
|
30- |
And (remember O Muhammad) when the
disbelievers plotted against you to arrest you or to kill you
or
to expel you (from Mecca) and they keep on plotting and God is
also planning and God is the Best Planner. |
|
31- |
And when Our Verses (of the Quran) were
read to them, they said:
"We heard it, if we want, we can of
course say similar to this. This is nothing but the tales of the
ancients." |
|
32- |
And when they also said: "O God, if this
(the Quran) is indeed the Truth from you,
then rain down stones
on us from the sky or bring on us a painful suffering". |
|
33- |
And God did not intent to punish them while
you were in their gathering,
nor would God punish them while
they seek forgiveness. |
|
34- |
But what good is in them, so that God
would not punish them while they bar (people)
from entering the
sacred Mosque (in Mecca) and they are not, its rightful
guardians.
None should be its guardians except God-conscious
pious people, but most of them don't get (this point). |
|
|
35- |
Their prayer at the House (of worship)
was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands.
Therefore (you
hostile disbelievers) taste the punishment because you used to
cover up the truth from yourselves. |
|
36- |
Those who disbelieve, spend their wealth
to hinder people from the Way of God,
so they continue to spend
it, but then it will become a cause of regret and pity on
themselves,
then they become overwhelmed and defeated and those
who disbelieve, ultimately will be gathered towards the Hell. |
|
37- |
God's Decision is to separate the wicked
people from the pure and good ones
and He places the wicked ones
one over the other,
then He shall pile them up altogether and place the (whole pile of the wicked people) into the Hell.
Those
are the real losers. |
|
38- |
Say to those who disbelieve; if they stop
attacking (the Muslims), their past (aggressions) will be
forgiven,
but it they return to hostility, then the destiny of those
punished before (should be a warning to them). |
|
39- |
And (O Muslims) fight them until there
is no more intrigue and oppression
and all worship is devoted to
God alone.
But if they stop (their aggression and idol worship),
then of course God is All Observant of what they do. |
|
40- |
And if they turn away (from the advice),
then know that God is your Superior-Protector, an Excellent
Guardian and Supreme Helper. |
|
41- |
And know that whatever of the spoils of
battle you gain,
then clearly one fifth of that is assigned for
(use in the way of) God and the Messenger
and the near
relatives,
the orphans, the poor and the (indigent) travelers,
if you really believe in God
and that (Revelation) which We sent down to
Our servant (Muhammad) on the Day of Distinction
and separation
(of good from evil), the day of confrontation of good and evil
(in the battle of Badr)
and God is Ever All Powerful over all
things. 3 |
|
|
42- |
(And remember) when you (the Muslim army)
were on the near (lower) side of the valley (at Badr)
and they
(the attacking disbelieving army) was on the farther (higher)
ground
and the supply caravan (of the disbelievers) was on
lower ground than you.
Even though you had made an appointment
to confront, you would have certainly differed on the
appointment,
but then it was as God who had decided the matter to be
done His Way,
so that those who perished, should perish and
those who were to live, might live as a clear evidence (of His
Might).
And surely God is All Hearing, All Knowing. |
|
|
43- |
(And remember) when God showed them as a
few in your dream (O Muhammad).
If He had shown them to you as
many, you would have been discouraged
and you (Muslims) would
have argued about the decision (of how to confront them),
but
God gave you calmness,
as He is All Aware of what
(thoughts and their effects) go on in your hearts (and minds). |
|
44- |
Also (remember) when He showed them
(the
army of disbelievers) to you when you met them, as a few in your eyes
(so you won't fear)
and He made you appear fewer in their eyes (so
they won't take you as strong),
so that God brings to realization a
matter and decision (on their defeat) that had already been decided (by Him)
and
to God return matters (of decision). |
|
|
45- |
O you who believe, when you conform an
enemy force, take a firm and decisive stand
and mention God many
times (in your mind and with your tongue), so that you may
become successful. |
|
46- |
And obey God and His Messenger and do not
dispute (with each other),
otherwise you might get discouraged and
weakened and your power and strength would leave and always be
patient,
as God certainly is with those who are patient and
steadfast. |
|
47- |
And do not be like those (disbelievers)
who left their homes (in Mecca)
happily boasting and to show off
people (that they are fighters, whereas)
they hinder people from
the Way of God and God is completely encompassing what they are
doing. |
|
48- |
And (think about it) when Satan
made their evil acts appear fair to them and suggested, telling
them:
"Today there is no one of the people, who can overcome you
and I am along with you."
But when the two forces came in sight
of each other, he ran away and said:
"I keep clear of you.
Indeed I see what you do not
see.
Indeed I fear God
and God is Severe in punishment." |
|
|
49- |
(Consider that) when the hypocrites and
those in whose hearts is a disease (of disbelief and double
talk) said:
"These Muslims' religion deceived them".
But whoever
puts his trust in God, (should know) then that God is indeed the
All Mighty Invincible, All Wise. |
|
|
50- |
If you could see when the angels take
away the souls of those who disbelieve (at time of their death),
they hit hard on their faces and their backs (saying): "Taste
the suffering from the Blazing Fire," |
|
|
51- |
"This punishment is because of what your
hands (your acts) sent before
and of course God is not unjust to
His servants (His creatures)." |
|
52- |
Similar to the behavior of the adherents
of the Pharaoh and those before them, who rejected the Verses of
God
and God caught them by their sins.
Indeed, God is
All Powerful, Severe in punishment. |
|
|
53- |
That is since God will never change a
favor and bounty that He has granted on a people
until they
change their attitudes in themselves (and become unworthy of
God's Blessings).
And God is Ever All Hearing, All Knowing. |
|
54- |
Similar to the behavior of the adherents
of the Pharaoh and those before them,
who rejected and claimed the Verses of their Lord as lies, We then destroyed them for their sins
and We
drowned the adherents of the Pharaoh and all of them were unjust
oppressors
(oppressing their conscience and other people). |
|
55- |
Indeed the worst moving creatures before
God are those who disbelieve
(in God, in His Messengers and the
Day of Judgment) and so they will not believe (as long as they
are alive), |
|
56- |
(Similar to) those from whom you
(Muhammad) took promise and agreement (not to attack the
Muslims),
yet later they break their promise each and every time and
they don't care and don't fear God. |
|
57- |
And whenever you reach or get hold of
them during the war and in the battlefield,
punish them severely
in order to disperse those who are behind them,
so that they may
learn a lesson (and stop attacking). |
|
58- |
And in case you fear treachery (in peace
treaties) from any group of people,
then throw their
agreement back at them, so as to be on equal terms (and not
bound by the agreement anymore).
Certainly God does not like the
treacherous people (those who make a treaty to cheat the other
party). |
|
59- |
And those who disbelieve should not think
that they can be ahead in wits and plans (by treachery),
as certainly
they can not overcome Us. |
|
60- |
And make ready against them all you can
in defensive power and horse powered vehicles of war
to deter the enemy of
God ('s religion) and your enemy (Muslims) by those means
and to deter others
beyond them, whom you are not aware of, but God knows them.
And
whatever you donate in the Cause of God (for the protection of
God's religion of Monotheism),
shall be repaid to you and you
shall not be dealt with unjustly
(you won't be underpaid back
for your donations for building of strong deterrent forces). |
|
61- |
But if they show desire for peace, you
(Muhammad) also go for it and trust in God.
Certainly He is
All Hearing, All Knowing. |
|
62- |
And if they want to deceive you, then of
course God is Sufficient to help you.
He is the One, Who helped and
supported you by His Aid and by the believers. |
|
63- |
And He caused friendship and fellowship
in their hearts,
such that if you had spent whatever wealth there
is on earth,
you could not cause such bond of fellowship in their hearts, but
God did unit them.
Certainly He is the All mighty,
All Wise. |
|
64- |
O prophet (Muhammad), God is Sufficient
(to protect you) and those of the believers who follow you. |
د |
|
65- |
O prophet (Muhammad), do urge the
believers to fight.
(so that) if there be twenty steadfast
persons amongst you, they will defeat two hundreds
and if there
be a hundred of you, they will defeat a thousand of the
disbelievers,
because they do not understand (the power of faith
in the One and Only God, the Creator) |
|
66- |
At this time, God has reduced and
lightened your task and duties
and has known that there is some
weakness in you.
So now if there be a hundred of you, they can
defeat two hundreds
and if there be a thousand, they could
overcome two thousands with the permission of God
and God is
with the patient and the steadfast (believers). |
|
67- |
It is not becoming for a prophet to have
prisoners of war (to free them with ransom-head money)
till the disbelievers have been defeated in the land (in the battlefield).
You
(ordinary folks) desire the material wealth of this world but
God wishes the blessings of the Hereafter for you.
And God is
the All Mighty, All Wise. |
|
68- |
Were it not for a previously rule (to
forgive you),
a severe and grand punishment would have touched
you for that (ransom) you took. |
|
69- |
So enjoy of what you have acquired as war
booty, lawful and good and be aware and mindful of God
(do not
trespass God's rules).
Certainly God is Very Forgiving, Most
Merciful (to good people). |
|
70- |
O prophet (Muhammad), say to the captives in
your hands:
"If God finds any good in your hearts, He will give
you something better than what has been taken away from you
and
He will forgive you and God is Very Forgiving, Most Merciful (to
good people)." |
|
71- |
But if (you notice) they intend to
betray (and deceive) you, they indeed betrayed God before,
so that God gave
you their custody and God is All Knowing, All Wise |
|
72- |
Indeed those who have believed and
emigrated (from Mecca)
and strove hard and fought with their
property and their lives and personalities
(thoughts-speech
and-actions) in the Cause of God as well as those (in Medina)
who gave them asylum, shelter and help-these are allies of each
other
and those who have believed but did not emigrate, you have
no duty in their protection (from Medina),
until they emigrate;
but if they seek your help in the matter of religion, it is your
duty to help them,
except against a group of people with whom
you have a treaty (of non-aggression and peace)
and God is
All Observant of what you do. 4
|
|
73- |
And of those who disbelieve, some are allies of
each other
and if you (Muslims) do not do the same
(that is if
you Muslims of the entire world do not unite and become each
other's allies and defend each other's rights),
there will be
oppression widespread on the face of earth and a great mischief
and corruption
(by the rule of the disbelievers).
5 |
|
|
74- |
And those who have believed and emigrated
and strove hard in the Cause of God
and those who gave them
asylum-shelter and aid, these are the real believers,
for them is
forgiveness and a generous provision (in Paradise). |
|
|
75- |
And those who have believed afterwards
and emigrated and strove hard along with you, they are also of
you.
And the blood relatives, some are nearer and more important than others
(such
as your child is closer to you than your cousin) in the decree
ordained in God's Book.
Truly, Good is All Knower of every and
all things. |
