Translation of the Holy Quran by Dr. Gilani

Joseph  -  Chapter 12                |                                     Contains 111 Verses – Mecca

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

1-

Alif Lam Raa (from Allah = God to Rasul = Messenger).
These are the Verses of the clarifying Book (Quran).

2-

We have in fact sent it down as an Arabic reading Quran,
so that you might understand and reason (about its content).

3-

We are telling you by revealing this Quran to you, the best of stories,
even though before that, you were one of those who were unaware of it.

4-

At one time, Joseph told his father (Jacob):
”O my father, indeed I have seen (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon, all of them I saw bowing for me.”

5-

He (Jacob) said: ” O my son, don’t tell your brothers of your dream,
otherwise they would plan a plot against you (out of jealousy).
Indeed Satan is an evident enemy of mankind (by making people plot against each other).”

6-

“Thus your Lord is choosing you (Joseph for prophet hood)
and will teach you the interpretation of the dreams (and other stories)
and will completely grant His Grace upon you
and the family and adherents of Jacob, just as He perfected it (the Grace) before upon our forefathers Abraham and Isaac.
Indeed your Lord is All Knowing, All Wise”.

7-

Indeed there has been Signs (of God’s Wisdom and Grace) in the story of Joseph
and his brothers for people who ask (to learn).

8-

Once they (the brothers) said: ”Joseph and his brother (Benjamin) are really dearer to our father than we are,
whereas we are a strong group.
Our father is indeed in a plain error (for favoring Joseph and Benjamin to us),”

9-

“Kill Joseph or throw him in to some (other far away) land
so that your father’s attention will be for you alone
and thereafter (you would repent and become) a righteous group of people”.

10-

One of those among them who was talking, said:
"If you want to do something, don’t kill Joseph, but throw him down to the bottom of a well,
some traveling caravan will pick him up?"

11-

(After deciding on this plot,) they said:
"O our father, why don’t you trust us with Joseph, while we are really his well wishers and we care for him?”

12-

“Send him tomorrow with us, he will enjoy and play and of course we will take good care of him and protect him.”

13-

He (Jacob) said: ”It would make me really sad if you take him away
and I dread and fear that a wolf may eat him, while you are away and careless of him.”

14-

They said: “If a wolf should eat him, while we are a strong group (guarding him), then we must really be the losers.”

15-

Then when they took him away and agreed to put him down the bottom of the well
and then We revealed to him (Joseph):
“You shall certainly inform them (someday) of their affair about this (plot) when they don’t recognize you (anymore).”

16-

And they came to their father in the early night, weeping

17-

They said: “O our father, we went on racing (running) and left Joseph with our belongings
and a wolf ate him but you wont believe us, even if were truthful.”

18-

And they brought also his shirt with false blood (on it).
He (Jacob, their father) said: “Not so, but your own minds made up this matter as a tale.
So (for me) patience is fair
and God (Alone) is the One Whose help in needed and sought against whatever you are describing.”

19-

And (later on) a caravan (of travelers) arrived (at the well), later they sent their water-drawer (to the well),
he then let his bucket (down to the well) he said: “What a good news, this is a boy”.
They concealed him as a merchandise (to sell him as a slave later),
but God knew all what they were doing.

20-

And they sold him for a low price, a few (silver) coins,
as they regarded him unimportant and they were disinterested in him.

21-

And the person from Egypt who had bought him told his wife:
“Make his stay honorable, may be he will be of benefit to us or we might adopt him as a son.”
Thus We established Joseph in the land (of Egypt)
and that We would teach him the interpretations of events and dreams.
And God has full power and control over His Affairs, but most of the people don’t know (this fact).

22-

And (later on) when Joseph reached his full manhood,
We granted him wisdom and knowledge and thus We reward those who do good deeds.

23-

And the woman, in whose house he was, tried to seduce him and she closed the doors and said: “come to me”.
He said: ”God forbid, He is my Lord (I obey Him, not you), He made my stay here comfortable.
Certainly the wrong and evil acting people won’t have a good future”.

24-

And she really desired him and he would have also desired her,
if he would not have recognized the evident guidance of His Lord (by his conscience).
Thus (by following his conscience) it was that We kept away from him evil behavior and illicit sex.
He was indeed one of our servants, freed from all desire (except desiring His Accord).                     1

25-

And they raced to the door and she tore his shirt grabbing its back (of his shirt)
and they both encountered her master (her husband) at the door.
She said (to her husband):
“What is the punishment of a person who intended on evil act against your family (wife)
other than to be put in prison or to receive a painful punishment?”

26-

He (Joseph) said: “She tried to seduce me!”
And (later) a witness from her family testified:
“If his shirt was torn from the front, then she must have said the truth and he would be a liar”.

27-

“But if his shirt was torn from the back, then she must have told a lie and he (Joseph) was being truthful.”

28-

So when he (the husband) saw his shirt (Josephs’ shirt) torn at the back, he said:
“That is really one of your (woman’s) plots. Indeed your plot designs are enormous.”

29-

“O Joseph, keep away from saying anything about this.
And you (woman) ask forgiveness for your sin.
In fact you were of the sinful.”

30-

And the women in town said: ” The wife of the governor is trying to seduce her slave.
A violent love has taken over her.
We notice well indeed that she is in plain error.”

31-

Later when she heard of their gossip plot, she sent invitation to them and prepared a banquet for them
and gave each one of them a knife (to cut foods) and told (Joseph): ”Come out before them”.
Then when they saw him, they applauded him and cut their hands (in amazement) and said:
“O my God, this is not a human being; this is none other than a noble angel”.

32-

She said: “This is (the young man) about whom you did blame me and I did seek to seduce him,
but he refused and remained innocent.
And now if he does not do what I order him to do,
he will certainly be put in jail and he will be among the humiliated ones.”

33-

He (Joseph) said: “Oh my Lord, prison is dearer to me than that to which they invite me.
And if you would not hold off their plot and scheme,
I would be on to them and would then be one of these who behave ignorantly.”

34-

So his Lord accepted his prayer and kept off their plot away from him, as He is All Hearing, All Knowing.

35-

Then even though they (the people in the government) had proofs (of his innocence),
they still came up with the decision to imprison him for a while.

36-

Incidentally two young men entered the prison with him. One of them said:
” I saw myself (in a dream) that I was pressing (grapes) for wine. “
and the other said: “ I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head and birds were eating of it;
tell us its interpretation, we see you indeed to be a good person.”

37-

He (Joseph) said: “I will inform you of its interpretation before any food of your provision arrives;
that is from the (knowledge) which my Lord has taught me.
I have in fact abandoned the religion and the way of life of those people who do not believe in the One God
and who deny the future (Ever Lasting) life.”

38-

And I have followed the religion of my forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob;
there was no point for us to associate anything with God (‘s Divinity),
this perception is from the Grace of God upon us and upon mankind, but most people are not appreciative.”

39-

“O my prison-mates, are different lords and gods better (to believe in)
or The One and Only God, The Supreme Dominant over all?”

40-

What you are worshipping other than Him,
are nothing but some names that you and your forefathers made up for these (idols),
for which God did not sent down any permission or authority.
Certainly no rule or judgment is valid except by God;
He ordered that you should not worship anyone except Him;
that is the upright (lasting) religion, but most people are not aware (of this fact).”

41-

“O my two prison-mates, as for the one of you, he (as a servant)
will pour wine for his master (after he gets out of the prison),
but the other will be crucified and birds will eat from his head.
The case about which you both were asking me, has already been decided and judged upon”.

42-

And he (Joseph) told the one of the two whom he thought would be freed:
”Mention me to your master”.
Then Satan had made him forget the remembrance of his master (of his lord)
So he (Joseph) stayed a few more years in prison.

43-

The king (of Egypt) said :
” I had a vivid dream indeed that seven fat cows were being eaten by seven lean cows
and I saw also seven ears of corn and other dry ones.
O you court people, explain to me the meaning of my dream, if you know how too interpret dreams.”

44-

They said: “These are mixed up dreams and we are not knowledgeable in interpreting dreams.”

45-

And the one of the two (prisoners with Joseph) who was freed and remembered (Joseph)
after a long period of time, said:
“I will tell you the true meaning of that (dream), so send me (on this mission to find him out).

46-

(He said :) “O Joseph, man of truth, explain to me (the meaning of a dream in which)
seven fat cows are being eaten by seven lean cows and seven green ears of corn and (seven) other dry ones,
so that I may go back to the people, (tell them your interpretation), so may be they will know.”

47-

He (Joseph) said: “You shall be farming carefully for seven years,
and whatever harvest you get, leave them in their ears not broken, except a few amount which you will eat”,

48-

"Since after that, there will be seven difficult hard years which will consume
what you had prepared for those tough (dry) years before,
except a little that will remain of the harvest that you had stored and saved (the previous seven years)",

49-

“Then there will come a year in which people will have abundant rain
and in which they will (have plenty to) press (fruit and produce for oil and juice)”.

50-

(After hearing that,) The king said: “Bring him (Joseph) to me.”
But when the messenger came to him (Joseph), he said: “Go back to your master and ask him:
what was the matter with the ladies who had cut their hands?
Certainly my Lord is Well-Aware of their plot".

51-

(The king) said (to the ladies): “What was your problem when you tried to seduce Joseph?”
(The Women) answered: “God forbid, we have known nothing evil against him.”
And the wife of the governor (who was first to try to seduce him) said:
“Now the truth is manifest (to everyone); it was I who sought to seduce him
and he has been of the truthful (kind of people)”.

52-

(Joseph then said: I asked for this question,)
so that he (the governor) would know well that I did not betray him in (his) absence
and that certainly God does not guide the scheme of the betrayers,”

53-

Furthermore I do not hold myself free of all blame, as indeed the human mind incites evil,
except that my Lord would have Mercy (to prevent it from happening),
as my Lord is indeed Very Forgiving, Most Merciful (to good people).

54-

And the king said: “Bring him to me so that I may have him serve next to myself
and when he spoke to him, he said (to Joseph):
“You are with us indeed from today on in high rank and trust.”

55-

(Joseph) said: “Allow me to manage the store-houses of the land, I am a good guardian and knowledgeable.”

56-

Thus We gave power and authority to Joseph in the land (of Egypt),
so that he could establish in there, wherever and however he wanted.
We do grant our Mercy on whomever We want and We never spoil the reward of those who do good.

57-

And the reward of the Hereafter is even better for those who believe and have been conscious of Us and pious.

58-

And (later) the brothers of Joseph came (to town) and came in to his office (to buy grains),
he then recognized them but they did not recognize him.

59-

And when he completed giving them their provisions, he said:
“(Next time) bring me your brother (he meant Benjamin) who is from your father.
Don’t you see that I give full measure and I am the best host
(for people who come a long way to buy grains and provisions?)".

60-

“But if you do not bring him, there will not be any measure (of grain to sell to you) and don't come near to me.”

61-

They said: “We will try to get his father’s permission to bring him and we will certainly do it.”

62-

And Joseph told his servants: “Put their money (which they paid for the grains) into their bags,
so that they would recognize it when they have returned to their folks, in order to (encourage) them to come again.”

63-

Then when they returned to their father, they said: “O our father, (We were told: )
no more grains will be given to us and we will be deprived from receiving it
(unless next time our brother Benjamin is sent with us,)
therefore send our brother with us, so we get the grain portion and we will definitely guard him.

64-

He (Jacob) answered saying: “Am I going to trust you about him, the way I trusted you before with his brother?
But then God is the Best Guardian and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

65-

And when they opened their bags and belongings, they found their money had been returned to them (in their bag).
They said: “O our father, what more can we want?
This is our money that has been returned to us; and (with it) we will get more food for our family
and we will protect our brother and we shall get an extra camel’s load.
This measure (of grain) will be very easy (to get from the governor)".

66-

He (Jacob) said: “I will never send him with you unless and until you come up with a firm oath to me
in the Name of God that you will bring him back to me, unless that you are surrounded
(by enemies or by circumstances beyond your control)”.
And when they had sworn their solemn and firm oath, he said:
“God is the Witness-Trustee to what we said.”

67-

And he also said: “O my sons, do not enter (all of you) by one gate (of the city),
but enter by different gates, however I can not protect you from God’s Design.
Certainly the decision rests only by God;
on Him I put all my trust and all who (want to) trust (in someone), should really trust in Him.

68-

And when they entered the city according to their father’s advice,
even that was not to protect them at all against anything of God’s (Will);
it was only some fatherly emotional needed matter which he had expressed
(by telling them to enter the city by different gates);
and in fact he was very knowledgeable from the knowledge that We had taught him,
but most people do not know (this fact).

69-

And when they arrived before Joseph, he placed his brother (Benjamin) next to himself and said (in low voice):
“I am your real brother, so don’t be sad anymore because of what they had done.”

70-

And when he furnished them with the provisions, he put the (golden) bowl in his brother’s (Benjamin’s) bag.
Then some announcer cried: “O you with the caravan, you are indeed thieves.”

71-

They said, turning towards them (the employees): “What is that you have lost?”

72-

They said: “We are missing the (golden) cup of the king,
and whoever brings it (back) will get a camel load (as reward) and I guarantee that.”

73-

They (the brothers of Joseph) said:
“By God you know that we did not come to do mischief in the land and we have never been thieves.”

74-

They said:
“What shall then the punishment of the one (who took the cup be), if you are found liars?”

75-

They said: “His penalty should be that in whomever’s bag it is found,
he should be held for punishment, we punish the wrong-doers this way (in our town).”

76-

The he (Joseph) started (to search) in their bags before the bag of his brother (Benjamin),
then he brought it (the golden cup) out of his brother’s bag.
Thus We (taught) Joseph how to plan (to keep his brother Benjamin in his care).
He was not supposed to keep his brother in the custody of the king (as a prisoner),
except if God had willed (his brother would stay with him);
We raise the degrees of standing of whomever We want (in the society as well),
and above all knowledgeable persons, is the All Knowing (God).

77-

They (Joseph’s brothers) said: “If he (Benjamin) steals,
it was indeed his own brother (Joseph) who also stole before (him).
Joseph (heard and) kept it to himself (this wrong accusation) and did not reveal the secret to them yet.
He said: “You are in a worse situation and God knows best what you are describing.”
2

78-

They said: “O Governor, indeed he (Benjamin) has an old father (who would be very sad for him if he is kept here),
so take one of us in his place.
We indeed notice that you are one good acting person.”

79-

He said: “God forbid that we would keep anyone other than the one by whom we found our property.
(If we did so) we would then in fact be wrong-doing people ourselves."

80-

So when they lost hope of it, they started to consult together whispering.
The oldest of them said: “Don’t you know that your father indeed had taken an oath from you by God
and before that you did fail regarding Joseph?
Therefore I won't leave this land till my father would permit me or God would decide for me
(by having Benjamin released) and He is the Best of the judges”.

81-

“Return to your father and say: “O our father, your son (Benjamin) in fact did steal
and we testify what we have learned to know (from other people’s saying)
and we could not know the unseen (and the future)."

82-

"And ask the (people of the) town where we were and the caravan which had taken us (there)
and we are certainly truthful.”

83-

He (Jacob) said (after he heard the story):
“Not so, your minds made up (such an important) matter seem acceptable to you.
So (now) patience is in good order.
May be God will bring them all back together to me;
as indeed He is the All Knowing, All Wise”.

84-

And he turned away from them and said: “What a pity for Joseph.”
and his eyes had turned white (opaque) because of the sorrow and grief and anger that he was keeping to himself.

85-

They (the sons) said: “By God, you will never cease to remember Joseph until you become weak or die (of sorrow).”

86-

He said: “I complain of my distress and grief only to God and I know from God that which you do not know".

87-

"O my sons, go and search around for Joseph and his brother’s condition
and do not despair of God’s spirit-giving Mercy.
Certainly no one loses hope of God’s spirit-giving Mercy except the disbelieving people.”

88-

They (went on back to Egypt and) when they arrived to him (Joseph), they said:
“O governor, a hard time has gotten to us and our family and we came with poor capital,
so please give us full ration measure and have charity on us.
Truly God rewards those who give charity.”

89-

He said: “Do you remember what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant (of right and wrong)?”

90-

They asked: “Are you really Joseph?”
He said: “I am Joseph and this is my brother (Benjamin).
God has indeed been gracious on us.
Certainly if one is conscious of Him, pious and patient in adversity,
then (he should know that) God does not spoil the reward of good behaving people.”

91-

They said: “By God, indeed God has raised you above us and we were indeed sinners.”

92-

He said: “No accusation is intended on you today;
may God forgive you and He is the Most Forgiving of all those who show mercy.”

93-

“Go and take this shirt of mine and lay it on the face of my father
and he will become clear-sighted and bring me your entire family together.”

94-

And when the caravan (of Joseph’s brothers) departed (towards their father’s place),
their father (Jacob) said (to the people around him):
“I do indeed smell the scent of Joseph, hope you don’t think of me as a senile (weak of mind because of old age).”

95-

They said: “By God, you are still in your old wrong imagination.”

96-

But then when the carrier of the good news arrived and laid it down (the shirt) on his face,
he then became again able to see.
He said: “Didn’t I tell you I know from God (‘s Mercy) what you don’t know?”

97-

They said: “O our father, ask forgiveness (from God) for our sins, we have indeed been sinners.”

98-

He said: “I will ask my Lord for forgiveness for you.
He is certainly Very Forgiving, Most Merciful (to good people)”.

99-

Then when they came in before Joseph, he took his parents to himself and said:
“Welcome to Egypt, if God wills, in security.”

100-

And he raised his parents to the high seating and they fell down prostrating for Him (to thank God).
And he said: “O my father, this is the meaning-interpretation of my dream before.
My Lord indeed made it come true and He really has been good to me
when He got me out of prison and brought you here from the bedouin-life of the desert
after Satan had caused enmity between me and my brothers.
Certainly my Lord is Very Kind and Caring for what He wills.
Indeed He is the One All Knowing, All Wise.”

101-

“My Lord, you have indeed granted me of governorship
and taught me some of the interpretations of events and dreams,
O the Originator of the heavens and the earth.
You are my Protector in this world and in the Hereafter.
Cause me to die, submitting myself (to Your Will) as a Muslim and join me with the righteous people.”

102-

These are the news, unseen (for you) that We reveal it to you (Muhammad)
and you were not present with them when they got together to discuss their matter
and while they were plotting (how to execute their plan against Joseph).

103-

And most people won't believe, even though you eagerly did try it and desire it.

104-

And you are not asking them for any reward or wage (for your mission of telling them the Word of God)
as this (the Quran) is only a Reminder for all mankind.

105-

And how many of individual Signs (of God) in the heavens and the earth they pass by
and yet they don’t care and turn away from them.

106-

And even most of them who believe in God, they still imagine partners (to God in creation and control)

107-

Do they feel secure of any episode of (overpowering) veil of punishment of God might arrive at them
or that the (Final) Hour could suddenly come upon them while they are unaware of it?

108-

Say : “This is my way (of life), I call and invite people towards belief in God by objective observation
and knowledge and those who follow me will do the same
and God is glorified above and beyond (all that they associate as partners to Him)
and I am not one of those who associate (other beings to God).

109-

And (in the past also) We sent men from townships (as Messengers) to whom We revealed (Our Messages).
Won't they travel on earth and see what was the end of those who lived before them?
And the Home of the Hereafter is of course better for those who are conscious of God and pious.
Don’t you use your reason and understand?

110-

(This process of denial by people repeated often,) until the Messengers gave up hope
and felt they were in fact treated as liars, when Our Help arrived to them; when We saved whom We willed,
but Our punishment can not be turned away from the habitual sinners.

111-

Indeed in their stories, there has always been an important lesson for people of understanding.
It (the Quran) is not a forged statement,
but rather the confirmation of that (portion of God’s previous revelations) available at the time
and a detailed explanation of all important matters and a guide and mercy for people who believe.
