Translation of the Holy Quran by Dr. Gilani

The Cave  -  Chapter 18                |                                     Contains 110 Verses – Mecca

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

1-

All praises and thanks to God, Who has sent down the Book (the Quran) to His servant (Muhammad)
and did not put any crookedness in it.

2-

(He made it the Quran) upright and lasting to warn (the disbelievers) of a severe punishment from His Mighty Command
and to give good news to the believers who do correct and righteous works,
that they will have a nice reward.

3-

In which they will stay forever.

4-

And to warn those (Christians and others), who say: “God has begotten a son or children”,

5-

About which they have no knowledge, nor did their forefathers have any such knowledge.
Awful big lie is this word that comes out of their mouths.
What they are saying is nothing but a lie.

6-

It is as if you (Muhammad) may lose your life by grief over the effects of those
who won’t believe in this Message (the Quran).

7-

Truly We have made whatever is on the earth as an attractive decoration for it,
as a means of testing them (the mankind), as to which of them is best in behavior
(choosing merely the attractive aspects of the material world
as the goal or the meaning of all that and using the means to do their best during their life on earth).

8-

And We shall certainly make whatever is on it (on the earth) a barren dry soil (at the end of the world).

9-

Did you think that the destiny of 'the friends of the cave and with their names written up'
were among Our wondrous Miracles?

10-

As the believing youth fled (their town Ephesus) to the cave and then prayed, saying:
“O our Lord, please bring about a Blessing from Your Majesty on us and provide a right way for us out of our problem”.    1

11-

Thereafter We placed suddenly on their sense of hearing and alertness a veil of silence and sleep,
in the cave for a number of years.

12-

Then We raised them up (from their sleep),
to reveal which one of the two groups was more accurate in calculating how long they had spent sleeping.       2

13-

We are relating their story to you (O Muhammad), in truth; they were young men believing in their Lord
and We further increased their guidance.

14-

And We gave strength to their hearts when they stood up (against the idol worship) and said:
“Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, never shall we pray or call to any god other than Him;
if we did else, we would have indeed expressed an enormous disbelief and nonsense”.

15-

These our people have chosen gods other than Him;
why don’t they present any clear explanatory proof about them (that they are real)?
So then who is more unjust and more wrong than the person who invents a lie about God (by claiming others as gods)?

16-

And (the young believers were inspired:)
“When you get away from them and those things that they worship, other than God,
then take refuge in the Cave, your Lord will open a way for you from His Mercy
and will provide an easy comfortable way out of your affair (your difficulties)”.

17-

And you would see the sun incline up on the right side of their cave
and when it set, would be declining on their left side, while they were lying in the middle of it
(the cave, the sun did not shine on them, as their cave was facing north, remaining cool).
Such are of the signs of the Favor of God;
whoever He guides, he then finds the way
and whoever He leaves in darkness (which that person chose), you won’t find them any guiding protector for him.

18-

Looking at them, you would think they were awake, but they were asleep
and We turned them on their right side and on their left side (to prevent pressure sores on their bodies)
and their dog was laying with its paws stretched out of the threshold of the cave (as if it was guarding them).
Had you come looking upon them, you would have certainly turned away from them in flight
and would have been filled with awe distress from their appearance.

19-

And in such condition (as they were), We raised them up (from their long sleep), so that they would ask each other.
One speaker from among them said: “How long have you been staying?”
They said: “We have stayed probably a day or part of a day”.
Others said: “Your Lord knows best how long you have stayed here.
So now send someone with this (silver) coin to town,
so he could look around to find which food is more clean and lawful,
then bring you some of that food and nutrition and he should behave with care and courtesy
and not inform anyone of your whereabouts”.     3

20-

"Since if they find out about you and come toward you, they will stone you
or force you into their pagan belief and then you would never be happy or reach salvation”.

21-

And so We made their story known (to the people) so that they might learn to know that the Promise of God
(including the Resurrection) is absolutely true and that there is no doubt about the Hour and Time
(of physical, and spiritual Resurrection), as they (the townspeople) disputed about their story.
Some said: “Build a building over them.
Their Lord knows best about them.       4
But those who prevailed their view about their case, said:
“We shall definitely build a place of worship (temple, mosque) over them”.

22-

People would say they were three, their dog being the forth;
yet others would say they were five and their dog being the sixth.
They are just guessing at the unseen; yet others say they were seven, their dog being their eight.
(O Muhammad) say: “My Lord knows best their number; none knows those except a few”.
Therefore do not engage in discussion about their number, except on that which is clear
and do not ask anyone of them of their opinion about them”.

23-

And you should never say about anything: “I shall do such and such thing tomorrow”,       5

24-

Except (adding to it :) “If God so wills”.
And when you had forgotten, remember your Lord (to say: “If God so wills”)
and say: “Hopefully my Lord will guide me to a way nearer to the right course than this”.

25-

And they stayed in their Cave for three hundred (solar) years, adding nine (for lunar Years).

26-

Say: “God knows best how long and how they spent (such a long time sleeping there).
He has the Knowledge of all the Unseen and the Invisible (to mankind) of the heavens and the earth.
He is the Absolute Observer of all and the Absolute Hearer.
They (the entire creation, all the beings) have no protector other than Him
and He does not allow anyone to share in His Rule and His Decision”.

27-

And recite (read again and preach) what has been revealed to you (O Muhammad)
of the Book (the Quran) of your Lord.
Nobody could change His wording and you can’t ever find any true refuge other than Him.      6

28-

And keep yourself patiently in associating with those (good worshippers)
who call and pray to their Lord mornings and evenings, seeking His Special Grace;
and don’t overlook them, desiring the beautiful appearance of the life of this world;
and do not obey the kind of person, whose heart We have left unaware of Our Remembrance,
and who follows his own desire and lust and whose behavior is extravagant.

29-

And say: “The truth is from your Lord”.
Then whoever wants, will come to believe and else whoever decides to refuse, let him disbelieve.
Indeed, We have prepared for the unjust (disbelievers) a Fire, whose walls will surround them
and if they ask for help (or water), they will be attended with a kind of liquid like boiling oil,
that will scald their faces.
What an awful drink and what an evil place to end up to.

30-

Certainly, regarding those who have believed and did correct righteous works,
of course We don’t spoil the reward of anyone of them, who did a good deed.

31-

Those people, for them there will be Everlasting Gardens, beneath which rivers flow,
in such a place they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and they will wear green garments of fine and thick silk
(with heavy brocade), they relax back there on couches.
What a nice reward and what a nice resting place, with friends.

32-

Also tell them the story of two men, to one of them We had given two gardens of grapes
and We had surrounded the two gardens with date palms and We had put between them crop fields.

33-

Each of these two gardens yielded its produce and never failed in its harvest
and We had caused a spring in the middle of it to become a stream.

34-

And he had a good income of harvest (of it).
Then one time he said to his companion while he was having a conversation with him:
“I am greater than you in property and stronger regarding manpower".

35-

And he entered his garden, while unjustly regarding himself
(as the real owner of it, forgetting that God had given him all).
He said: “I don’t think that this will ever perish.”

36

And I do not think the Hour (the Day of Judgment in the Hereafter) would ever happen to be established,
and even if I would be brought back to my Lord (on the Time of Judgment),
I shall surely find better than this, when I am returned (to life in the Hereafter).

37-

While talking to him, his companion said to him:
“Have you disbelieved in Him (forgetting that He has given you all),
the One who created you from the ground-dust (in the first phase, originally),
then also from a cell (spermatozoon + ovum), then He made and fashioned you as a man?”

38-

“But in my belief, He is God, my Lord (Creator and Provider)
and I shall never associate anyone as a partner in my Lord’s Dominion.”

39-

“Why wouldn’t you have said when you entered your garden:
'Whatever God wills, (will come to pass) There is no power except that it belongs to God.'
If you see me less than you in wealth and children,”

40-

“It may be then that my Lord will grant me something better than your garden
and might send a (lightning) bolt on it from the sky and it becomes a slippery ground (in pieces),”

41-

“Or its water could sink deep underground, then you would not be able to reach it.”

42-

And so his harvest was surrounded and doomed (with rain).
And he then came to rubbing the palms of his hands over the loss of what he had spent on it,
while it was destroyed upside down and he kept saying:
“I wish I had never associated anyone with my Lord (I whish that I had not thought that 'I had it made',
but I would have understood that all my existence and possessions are from God)".

43-

And he had no crew to help him against God (‘s Decision), nor could he be helped at all.

44-

There (as from this example you realize that) all authority and protection belongs to God, the True One.
He is Best in rewarding and Best to determine and judge the consequences (of human behavior)

45-

(O Muhammad) Also give them (the people) an explanatory example of the life of this world,
like the process of the water that We send down from the sky,
then the vegetation of the earth comes in contact with and absorbs of it,
becoming fresh, then later it becomes dry stubble, which the winds scatter around.
(the life of this world is short and temporary).
And God is Ever All Mighty over all matters, Who determines what shall be done.

46-

Wealth and children are the attractions of the life of this world,
but the lasting good deeds are more important to be rewarded in Observance of God
and to be deserving as a source of hope (for the future life in the Hereafter and in this world as well) .         7

47-

And (remind them) of the Day when We move the mountains by setting them in motion
and you see the earth leveled and We resurrect them all (all the people from the state of death) together
and then We will not miss a single one of them.

48-

And they will be placed before your Lord (’s Judgment) in rows, (God saying: )
“You have indeed come to Us, as We created you the first time as well,
although you tended to think that We would not make any such appointment for you”.

49-

And the record (of everyone’s deeds) will be placed (for judgment)
and you would see the guilty persons filled with dread and anxiety as to what is in it (in their record of life)
and they say: “Woe to us, what kind of record is this that misses neither a small nor a big thing,
but has recorded and accounted them all".
And they will find all that they had done, present before them.
And your Lord does not treat anyone unjustly.

50-

And (be reminded that) when We told the angels:
“Bow down your forehead on the ground for (the creation of) Adam”.
Then they (all) bowed down themselves to the ground except Iblis, who was one of the Jinns.
So he disobeyed the Command of his Lord.
Now then do you (humans) take him and his offspring (followers) as your protectors instead of Me?
Whereas they are enemies to you.
What an evil exchange there is among unjust wrong-doers.
8

51-

I (God) did not make them (angels, jinns, others) to witness the Creation of the heavens and the earth,
nor their own creation and I was never going to have the misleaders (Iblis = Satan and his army of followers)
as helpers to Me.

52-

And (be reminded of) the Day, when He (God) will say (to disbelievers):
“Call now those whom you thought as my partners (to help you)”.
Then they will call them, but they will not answer them and We have a barrier between them (no communication).

53-

And the criminals and sinners see the Fire and they perceive that they are going to be placed in it
and find no way to escape from it.

54-

And We have indeed placed presentation of all kinds in this Quran for mankind.
But mankind is quarrelsome about most of the things (they like to argue for the sake of argument).

55-

And nothing has stopped people from believing when the guidance (the Quran) came to them
and from asking forgiveness of their Lord, other than because of the tradition of ancients was presented to them
(and they think they must follow the wrong old ways)
until the fate of ancient (disbelievers) befalls them or the punishment is brought to them face to face.

56-

And we do not send Messengers except as bringers of good news (to good people)
and as warners (to disbelievers and evil ones) and the disbelievers keep on arguing with false argument
so that they suppress the truth
and to treat My Verses and the points which they are warned about, as a joke and mockery.

57-

And who is more wrong than the person who is reminded of the Verses and the Lessons of his Lord,
but turns away from them and forgets what he has done in his past?
Truly We have thrown veils on their hearts (because of their unwillingness to understand,)
so they can not understand it (the Quran) and on their ears, We put a heaviness in their ability to hear (the Truth).
And if you (Muhammad) call them to the Guidance, then they can not be guided at all.

58-

And your Lord is Most Forgiving, possessing Mercy.
Had He called them (in this world) for questioning about what they have done,
He would definitely have hastened their punishment.
But they have their appointed promised time (on Judgment Day) beyond which they won't find any escape.

59-

And those are the towns (which) We destroyed them because they (their inhabitants)
did a lot of wrong and injustice and We appointed a certain appointed time for their destruction.

60-

Also (be reminded) of the story of Moses when he said to his young companion:
“I will not give up (traveling) till I reach the junction of the two seas (rivers) even if I spend years traveling
(to meet a special servant of God whom He advised me to meet).”

61-

Then when they reached the junction between the two seas
they forgot about their fish which they had taken as food for their journey
and while they had stopped for a rest there, the fish (then moved out of their basket and)
found to take its way straight toward and into the sea nearby.

62-

Then when they had moved on from there, he (Moses) told his young follower:
“Bring us our meal, we have really gotten very tired from this journey of ours.”

63-

He said: “Do you remember when we got to the rock (‘s shade) to rest?
I actually forgot about the fish, none other than Satan made me forget to remember securing it
and it took its way into the sea in a strange manner.”

64-

(Moses) said: “That place is exactly what we have been looking for (to meet the special servant of God there)”.
They then turned back retracing their footsteps.

65-

They later found one of Our good servants, whom We had granted a special Mercy from Us
and whom We had taught a special knowledge from Us.

66-

Moses told him (the special servant of God): “May I follow you so that you would teach me
some of that knowledge which you have been taught in your progress (by God)?”

67-

He said “You will indeed not be able to have patience with me (for what I will be doing),”

68-

“And how could you have patience on something you don’t have detailed knowledge of?”

69-

He (Moses) said: “God willing you will find me a patient person
and I will not disobey and disagree with you in any situation.”

70-

He said: “Then if you are going to follow me,
do not question me about anything until I myself mention about it to you.”

71-

They both then went on till they entered the ship,
in which he made hole in it (its bottom).
(Moses) questioned saying:
“Did you make a hole in the ship to drown its people?
You have really done an awful thing!”.

72-

He answered, saying: “Didn’t I tell you that you cannot have any patience with me?”

73-

(Moses) said “Don’t blame me for I forgot and don’t be hard on my behavior.”

74-

Then they both proceeded till they met a young man and he (the special servant of God) killed him.
(Moses) questioned saying “Did you just kill someone innocent who did not kill anyone?
You have just committed a dreadful thing”.

75-

He answered, saying: “Didn’t I tell you that you can not have any patience with me?”

76-

Moses (said):
“If I question you about anything after this, then don’t keep me in your company.
You have indeed my apology.”

77-

They then went on until they reached people in a village, whom they asked for some food,
but they refused to host them.
They then noticed a wall in that place, which was about to collapse and he set it up straight.
(Moses) said: “If you had wanted, you could have certainly received a salary for it (for your work fixing the wall).”

78-

He said: “This is now the time of separation between me and you (Moses),
but I will tell you the real meaning of those actions (of mines) over which you could not have any patience.”

79-

“As for the ship, it belonged to needy people working in the sea.
So I decided to make a defect in it, as there has been beyond them, a king, who seizes all the ships by force.”

80-

“And about the young man, his parents have been good believers
and we have been very concerned (by special knowledge from God) that he was going to cause grief upon them
by (his) rebellion, wickedness and disbelief,”

81-

“So we prayed that their Lord will grant them instead another child better than him
in purity and closer (to them) in loving kindness.”

82-

“And as for that wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in that town
and underneath that wall, there was buried a treasure for them and their father was a good righteous man
and so your Lord intended that they reach their age of full strength and they will dig out their treasure,
as a mercy from your Lord.
And I did not do them (these events) out of my own decision.
That is the real meaning of all those events that you were unable to bear with patience.”

83-

And they ask you about the two-horned person (of the past).
Say: “I shall read to you some of his story.”          9

84-

We had in fact given him a lot of power on earth and gave him the means of access to everything.

85-

So he used these means and inspirations and followed a way (westwards),

86-

Till he reached the west and the setting of the sun in an area of muddy spring water and he met there a people.       10
We (God) told him (by inspiration): “O two-horned man,
(Now you have the authority to) either punish them (the cruel ones for their wrongdoings)
or treat them (the good ones) with kindness.”

87-

He said: “As to the person who does injustice, we shall punish him,
then he will be brought back to his Lord (after his death), then He will punish him with a terrible punishment".

88-

But as for the person who believes (in God) and does righteous works,
he shall have a nice reward and by our command and instruction, we shall speak for him consideration and easiness.”

89-

Then he followed another way (eastwards).

90-

Till he arrived (way east,) to the rising of the sun, he found it rising over a people,
for whom We (God) had not provided any shelter (by trees, mountains, etc. as in deserts).

91-

So it was (as well as his just treatment wherever he went)
and We knew all about him and his behavior and what he encountered.

92-

He then followed another way (by inspiration of God towards a mountainous area),

93-

Until he reached an area between two mountains,
beyond where he found a people who barely understood any of (other people’s) words.

94-

They said: “O the two-horned (King), Gog and Magog are doing great mischief in the land.
So may we pay you a tribute to put a barrier between us and them?
11

95-

He said: “What my Lord has given me in wealth and power is better (than your tribute).
So help me with your manpower, I will erect a barrier between you and them.”

96-

“Bring me large pieces of iron”
Then after he piled up and filled the gap between the two mountain sides, he said:
“Now blow (with your bellows unto the fire on it) till He made it (the iron) like a fire.”
He said: “Now get me molten copper to pour over it.”

97-

And thereafter (the barrier was solidly built and their enemies, the Gog and Magog gangs)
could not scale it, nor dig through it.

98-

(The two-horned person: Cyrus) said: “This is a Mercy from my Lord,
but when the Promise of my Lord (at the end of the worldly human life) comes to pass,
He shall make it (the barrier) level to the ground and my Lord’s Promise is ever true”.

99-

And on that day, We shall have them come wave after wave into each other,
and the Trumpet will be blown (for the start of Judgment) and We shall gather them (the humans, etc) all together.

100-

And We shall present the Hell on that Day for the disbelievers in plain view.

101-

Those whose eyes were covered from looking at My Advice (the Quran) and they could not bear listening to it at all.

102-

Do then those who disbelieve, imagine they could take my servants
(Such as the holy spirit Gabriel, Jesus, Mary or any Imams or Saints)
as their lords or gods or protectors besides Me?
We have indeed prepared the Hell to accommodate the disbelievers.

103-

(O Muhammad) Say: “Shall I inform you who the greatest losers are regarding their works?”

104-

"They are those whose efforts went in the wrong direction during their life in this world,
all the while they were imagining that they were doing a good work.”

105-

“Those same who denied the Verses and Messages of their Lord and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter),
so all their actions were in vain and useless,
therefore on the Resurrection Day, We will not assign any weight or worth for them or their actions.”

106-

“Thus Hell shall be the yield of their deeds because they disbelieved
and took My Messages and My Messengers as subjects of joke and mockery.”

107-

Certainly those who have believed and did righteous good works, the gardens of Paradise will be their welcome home.

108-

In which they will stay forever and would not have any desire to leave it.

109-

Say: “If all the sea were as ink for (writing) the words of my Lord,
surely the sea would be exhausted, before the words of my Lord would be finished,
even if We would bring to add another sea like it”.

110-

(O Muhammad) say: “I am only a human being like you.
It has been revealed to me that certainly your God is only One God.
So whoever hopes for the Meeting of his Lord, should act correctly
and should not associate anyone as partner to his Lord”.
