Gilani |
The Light - Chapter 24
|
Contains 64 Verses – Medina |
|
In the Name of God, the
Most Gracious the Most Merciful |
|
|
1- |
This is a chapter, which We sent down (as
guidance) and have made its rules mandatory
and We sent down in
it clear Verses (lessons and Revelations of Rules) so that you bear them
in mind. |
|
2- |
As for adulteress and adulterer, flog each
one of them with one hundred lashes;
and let not undue pity
keep you from executing this ordinance of God about them,
if you
really believe in God and the last Day (of Judgment)
and it is
necessary that a group of believers should witness the scene of
their punishment.
1 |
|
3- |
An adulterer (man) shall not marry but an
adulterous or an idolatress (woman)
and an adulterous (woman) shall not marry
but an adulterer (man) or an idolater
and such (marriages) are
forbidden to the believers (chaste people should marry only
chaste counter parts). |
|
4- |
And as for those who accuse chaste women
(the woman who is pure), but cannot bring forward four witnesses,
flog them eighty lashes and do not accept any testimony from them ever again,
as
they are the mischievous ones (who want to cause trouble in
families and the society),
|
|
5- |
Except those who repent after such
mischief and amend their behavior by doing good deeds,
as God is
certainly Very Forgiving, Most Merciful. |
|
6- |
As for those who accuse their spouses (of
adultery), but
have no witnesses except themselves,
then the testimony of each one
of them should be four times,
swearing each time to God that the person is definitely telling
the truth. |
|
7- |
And the fifth of his testimony should be that
the curse of God be upon that person, if that person is lying.
|
|
8- |
And she (the accused wife) shall avert and
keep away punishment from her,
if she bears witness four times
by God that he (the husband) is telling a lie. |
|
9- |
And the fifth testimony should be that the
wrath of God be upon her, if he (the husband) was being
truthful. |
|
10- |
And had it not been for the Grace of God
and His Mercy upon you
(, you would have been involved in a lot
of troubles and wrong judgments)
and God is the One who very often accepts
repentance and is All Wise. |
|
11- |
Of course those who came up with the
accusation and slander (to the pure woman), are a group from amongst you.
Do not consider it (the accusation) harmful to you, but it is
good for you, since for every person among them
(who spread the accusation) will get part of the sin (of
accusation and slander),
and the one who played and orchestrated
the major part among them, will have a great punishment.
2 |
|
12- |
Why the believing men and believing women
when they heard it, not think well of their own folks and did not say:
“This accusation is an obvious lie". |
|
13- |
Why did they not come up to it with four
witnesses?
So because they (the slanderers) did not produce four
witnesses, then they are considered by God to be the liars.
|
|
14- |
Had it not been for the Grace of God upon
you and His Mercy in this world and in the Hereafter,
a great
punishment and suffering would have touched you for what you
spoke wrongly. |
|
15- |
When you are suggesting it with your speeches
and tongues and you are uttering it with your mouths,
something of
which you have no knowledge of,
and you count it as a trivial matter, (you should know that)
this (matter of slander) is of great importance in the sight of God.
|
|
16- |
And why then, when you heard it, did not
say:
“It is not right for us to talk about this, Glory is to You
(O God). This is a grave lie and accusation”. |
|
17- |
God advises you to never repeat such a thing,
ever, if you are real believers. |
|
18- |
And God explains His Verses (Lessons of
Revelations) for you and God is All Knowing, All Wise. |
|
19- |
Certainly those who like to see rumors
of illicit sexual content to be spread amongst and against the
believing people,
will get painful suffering in this world and
in the life to come and God knows all and you don’t know. |
|
20- |
And were it not for the Grace of God upon
you and His Mercy (you would be in big trouble)
and of course
God is Very Kind and Most Merciful. |
|
21- |
O you who believe, do not follow the
footsteps of Satan.
And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan
(should know)
that he commands to promiscuity, indecency and
wrong behavior.
And had it not been for the Grace of God upon
you and His Mercy, none of you would ever have been pure,
but
God cleanses and purifies whom He wants (and who wants to be
cleansed).
And God is Ever All Hearing, All Knowing. |
|
22- |
And those of you who have been blessed
more with graces and wealth,
should not decide against helping their kinsmen, close relatives, the poor
and those who left their homes for the Cause of God.
Instead they should
forgive and overlook their mistakes.
Don’t you like that God would forgive you?
And God is Very Forgiving, Most Merciful.
3 |
|
23- |
Certainly those who slander and accuse
chaste, unaware believing women,
are cursed (deprived of God’s
Grace) in this world and in the life to come
and they will have
great punishment, |
|
24- |
On the Day when their own tongues and
their hands and their feet will bear witness against them
regarding the deeds that they were doing. |
|
25- |
On that Day, God will pay them back their
just dues
and they will realize that God is the Ultimate Truth,
Who makes all things manifest. |
|
26- |
The corrupt women are for corrupt men and
the corrupt men for corrupt women;
and the nice pure women are
for good pure men
and likewise the good men are for good women.
These (good people) are innocent of what wrong people say about them.
They
will have a forgiveness and an excellent livelihood (in the
Hereafter). |
|
27- |
You who believe, do not enter houses
other than yours until you have asked and obtained permission
and have greeted its inhabitants.
That is best for your own good, so
that you bear it in mind (that this is a good manner). |
|
28- |
In case you do not notice anyone inside,
then do not enter until permission is given to you,
and if you
are told: “Go back”, then go back.
That is more appropriate for
you and God knows well all that you do. |
|
29- |
It is not wrong for you to enter
non-residential buildings, where there is some livelihood for
you
(such as stores, public libraries etc)
and (you should
always be aware that) God knows well what you do openly and what
you conceal. |
|
30- |
Tell the believing men to lower their
gaze (not to stare at women) and to guard their chastity,
this
will be more helpful for their purity, as in fact God is
Ever Aware of whatever they do. |
|
31- |
And tell the believing women that they also
should lower their gaze (and not stare at men)
and to protect
their chastity
and not to display their charms and ornaments
except what is customary to appear (such as rings and bracelets
etc)
of that and that they should well cover their veils (head
coverings) over their breasts
and not to display their beauty or
ornaments except to their husbands,
their fathers,
their
husband’s fathers,
their sons,
their husband’s son’s,
their
brothers
or their brother’s sons,
or their sister’s sons
or
their women
or the (female) persons whom they are in charge of their care,
or male
attendants without sexual desires
or children who have no
awareness about women’s sexuality
and that they should not
strike their feet (on the ground) to draw attention to their hidden charms.
And
o you believers turn all of you together back to God,
so that you reach success and the happy state. |
|
32- |
Encourage those amongst you who are
single to marry,
as well as the good persons of your male or female slaves;
if they are poor, God will give them
sufficient means from His Grace,
and God gives abundance and
knows all conditions. |
|
33- |
And those who do not find the possibility
of any marriage, should keep themselves chaste and guarded,
till
God gives them means out of His Grace.
And those ones from among
people whom your hands are in charge of their custody,
if they ask for a
deed of freedom (from slavery, to be free after a period of
working for you),
then do write that deed for them, if you have
already noticed goodness in them.
And give them (as wage or
gratuity) from the wealth that God has granted you.
And do not
ever force your maids to commit whoredom, whereas they desire
marriage or chastity,
so that you may gain some of the worldly
belongings;
and anyone who forces them (to sex), should know that God is
Very Forgiving, Most Merciful (to them),
after their being forced
(in their helplessness). |
|
34- |
And indeed We have sent Lessons and
Messages, clearly showing the right way and an illustration from
(the story of lives of) those who passed away before you
and as admonishing advice for the careful pious persons. |
|
35- |
God is the Light of the heavens and the
earth.
An example of His Light (is such that He places in a human
being,) is as a lamp-container in which
there is a lamp,
the lamp being in a glass;
the glass shining as
if it were a brilliant star,
but lit from (the oil of) the
blessed olive tree,
(this light) is neither
limited to the east nor to the west,
it is as if the fuel oil of it
glows on, even if no fire would touch it,
it is a light (inside a human being) that goes from one to
another.
God by His Light, guides whomever he wants (also whoever
wants to be guided).
And God sets examples for people (so they
would understand better)
and God is All Knowing of all
things and all matters.
4 |
|
36- |
(The Light of God is also) in the houses
and buildings which God has permitted to be raised
and His Name
to be mentioned in them, where he will be mentioned there for
His Glory, mornings and evenings. |
|
37- |
(The Light of God is also in) the people,
in men whom neither any trade, nor any business sales would divert
them
or keep them away from the remembrance of God, nor from
performing regular prayers, nor from giving charity.
They are
anxious and fear about a Day (of Resurrection - Accountability)
when hearts and eyes will anxiously turn about, |
|
38- |
Hoping that God may reward them according
to the best of what they ever did
and that He would add even
more of His Grace to them.
And God does provide for whom He
wants, beyond all reckoning |
|
39- |
As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are
like a mirage in a desert, which a thirsty person takes it for
water,
until he comes up to it; he finds it to be nothing, but
he finds out the Ever-Presence of God with him,
Who will pay him
his account in full, as God is Swift in addressing accounts. |
|
40- |
Or (the deeds of the disbelievers) are
like the darknesses of a vast deep see;
which is covered by
waves upon waves,
topped by layers of dark clouds over other dark clouds layers (darkness over darkness),
(it is so dark that)
if a person holds out his hand, he can hardly see it;
and for whom God does not give any light, that person has no light. |
|
41- |
Don’t you notice or observe that God is
the One Who all that are in the heavens and the earth, glorify
Him.
(by their obedience to His Rules and Dominion),
also the birds
with their wings spread in flight (glorify Him)?
Each has indeed learned to know its prayer (the way to pray to
God) and its glorification (by inspiration, how to glorify Him)
and God is
All Aware of what they do. |
|
42- |
And to God belongs the sovereignty and
dominion of the heavens and the earth
and the ultimate journey’s
end is to God. |
|
43- |
Don’t you observe that God moves the
clouds,
then He makes them join together,
then He piles them up in
masses and layers
and then you would see rain coming down from
between them
and He sends down from the sky, from mountains of
ice-clouds, hail,
with which He strikes whomever He wills, and He keeps it away
from whomever He wills.
The
strong flash of its lightning could almost blind the sights. |
|
44- |
God causes the night and the day to
change and succeed each other;
certainly in this phenomenon,
there is a lesson to think about for people who have insight. |
|
45- |
And God created all moving creatures from
water.
And of them, there are those which crawl on their bellies
and some that walk on two legs and some which walk on four.
God creates whatever He wills; indeed God is capable to do all
things. |
|
46- |
We have indeed sent down clarifying
Revelations and Verse (the lessons of Quran)
and God guides whomever He wills (and
whomever wants to be guided) towards the straight path (to God). |
|
47- |
They (the hypocrites) say: “We have
already believed in God and in the Messenger (Muhammad) and we
obey”,
but then, some of them turn away from this afterwards,
and such are by no means true believers. |
|
48- |
And so is that when they are called upon to
follow the Rules of God and to follow the Messenger,
so that he (Muhammad) could judge
between them (in their disputes), then some of them refuse and
turn away. |
|
49- |
But if they had the right, they
would come to him quite willingly (to accept his judgment). |
|
50- |
Is there then a sickness in their
hearts (their minds)?
Or do they doubt (that this is the Divine Revelation)
or do they fear that God and His Messenger might do injustice to
them?
But it is they in fact who are doing injustice and wrong
(to themselves). |
|
51- |
In reality, the response of the true
believers,
when they are called unto God and His Messenger to
judge between them, is that they say:
“We listen and we obey.”
And such are the one who are successful in reaching a happy
state. |
|
52- |
And whoever obeys God and His Messenger
and are in awe of God and conscious of Him (fear disobeying Him),
those are the ones
who will be the true successful persons. |
|
53- |
And they swear by God with
their most solemn oath
that if you (Muhammad) orders them, they
will certainly go out (to war with you).
Say: “Don’t swear, a
reasonable obedience is required.
Certainly God is All Aware of
what you do and behave.” |
|
54- |
Say: “Obey God and obey the Messenger, then if you turn away
(you must know that), he is responsible
only for the duties placed on him
and you are responsible for
duties placed on you (by God by His Messenger).
And if you obey
him, you will be guided correctly
and there is no duty on the
Messenger (towards you) but to convey the Message clearly". |
|
55- |
God has promised those of you who believe
and do righteous good deeds,
that He will certainly make them
succeed to rule in the land (to replace wrongful rulers)
as He has made
succeed to rule, those people before them
and He will certainly
grant them the possibility to practice and establish their religion, which He
has liked for them (Islam)
and He will surely give them change and relief into a secure situation after their fearful condition,
so that
they worship Me and do not associate anything with
Me.
But whoever disbelieves after this, then they will be counted as rebellious wrong doing persons. |
|
56- |
Establish regular prayers, give charity, and
obey the Messenger so that you may receive Mercy. |
|
57- |
Do not count the disbelievers to prevail in
the land (against God)
and their home will be the Fire of the Hell and what a real
awful place it is. |
|
58- |
O you who believe, it is necessary that those
whom you have the authority to take care of them
and the children who have not yet reached puberty, to ask your
permission three occasions (before entering your room),
once before the dawn prayer, and (in the heat of) noon time when
you lighten your clothes and after the night prayer;
these are the three private times for you.
On other times, there is no problem for you or for them to walk
around each other.
So God explains to you His Verses (His Lessons of conduct) clearly
and God is All Knowing, All Wise.
|
|
59- |
And after your children reach puberty, it is
necessary that they ask permission as did those before them.
So does God explains to you His Verses (His Lessons)
and God is All Knowing, All Wise. |
|
60- |
And the senior among the women who do not
expect any marriage anymore,
to them there is no sin if they
discard their outer dresses, but not showing off any of their
ornaments.
But if they refrain even from this, it is better for
them
and God is All Hearing, All Knowing. |
|
61- |
There are no restriction for the blind,
nor on the lame,
nor is there any restriction on the sick,
nor
on yourselves (healthy persons) if you eat meals in your own
houses,
or in the houses of your fathers or in the houses of your
mothers,
or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your
sisters or the houses of your father’s brothers
or the houses of
your father’s sisters or the houses of your mother’s brothers
or
the houses of your mother’s sisters
or the houses of which you
have the keys
or in the houses of any of your friends;
there is no sin on you if
you eat together or separately.
But when you enter any of the houses, greet each other, with a nice greeting,
wishing well from
God for them to be blessed and to be fine and healthy.
Thus God explains His Verses (His
Lessons for good behavior) for you, so that you learn to use
your reasoning. |
|
62- |
True believers are those who believe in
Allah (The One Almighty, Invincible God) and His Messenger
(Muhammad)
and when they are with him regarding a community matter of
concern, don’t just go away unless they ask his permission.
Certainly (o Muhammad) those who ask your permission are those
who really believe in God and His Messenger.
So if they ask your permission for some chores of their own,
then give permission to whom
of them that you want and ask God to forgive them;
as God is indeed Very Forgiving, Most Merciful. |
|
63- |
Do not regard the calling of the Prophet
upon you same as a call or summon of you onto each other;
God knows
well those who under shelter of excuse, slip away.
Therefore warn those who behave against His Commandment, (to be
aware of this rule),
else a hard trial would befall them or a painful punishment would befall them (in this
world and or in the Hereafter). |
|
64- |
Be aware that of course to God belongs whatever
is in the heavens and the earth.
Certainly He knows what you are
up to,
and on the Day that they are brought back to Him,
He will
then inform them of all that they had done
and God is All Aware of
everything |
1
As evident, God did not order any stoning in the Quran,
but in the misinterpreted Old Testament (Chapter Genesis, it is written
that a son who disobeys his father, shall be stoned to death), but no
such word in the Quran
2
During return from one of the defensive expeditions of the Prophet Muhammad,
his wife Aisha, who was accompanying him, went back in search of her
valuable necklace she had dropped. She got lost until the next day she
was found by a Muslim man who brought her back to the prophet on the
back of his camel. Some hypocrites used this to spread rumor and false
accusations against Aisha
3
This refers to the swearing of Abu-Bakr against his nephew, who had spread
rumor against Aisha, the daughter of Abu-Bakr and wife of Prophet
Muhammad
4
In this example the Light of God (including the Revelations via the
Prophets of God ) is in the being of the believer (the lamp container
and more specifically in the shining glass of her or his heart, which
keeps on shining by the pure food for thought; by the Revelations (just
as oil is necessary for the lamp to shine), even though no fire is
needed for this lamp, which shines as a light from one person to another.
