Translation of the Holy Quran by Dr.
Gilani |
The Standard (or the Criterion) - Chapter 25
|
Contains 78 Verses – Mecca |
|
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful |
|
|
1- |
The Source of all blessings is the One,
Who sent down the Criterion
(the Distinguisher of right and
wrong: this Quran) to His servant (Muhammad) so that he would be
a warner to mankind. |
|
2- |
The One to Whom belongs the dominion and
control of the heavens and the earth
and Who would never take
someone as a son
and Who has no partner in the Mastery and
Dominion
and Who has created everything and also gave it
specific measurement, design and destiny. |
|
3- |
Yet some choose to worship, instead of
Him, gods (objects of worship) who can not create anything,
but are themselves
created and don’t have even the ability to control harm or
benefit upon themselves
and have no power over death, nor over
life, or on Resurrection (after death) |
|
4- |
And those who disbelieve say:
“This (the
Quran) in nothing but a lie that he (Muhammad) has forged and
other people have helped him at it”.
In fact they themselves
come up with an unjust accusation and a falsehood. |
|
5- |
And they say: “(these are) Tales of ancient times,
which he (Muhammad) wrote down
and they are being dictated to
him mornings and evenings”. |
|
6- |
(O Muhammad) Say: “He Who knows all the
mysteries of the heavens and the earth, has sent it down (to me).
Truly He is Very Forgiving, Most Merciful”. |
|
7- |
And they say: “What sort of Messenger is
this (Muhammad), who eats food
and walks about in the markets
(like other people)?
Why an angel was not sent down to him
(visibly) to act as warner together with him?” |
|
8- |
“Or (why) a treasure was not granted to
him or why does he not own a garden, so that he could eat of its
produce?”
And so these unjust people say: “You are following
only a bewitched man”. |
|
9- |
See how they make up stories about you or call you names,
as they have
gone astray and therefore they are unable to find a way (to the
truth). |
|
10- |
The Absolute Source of all blessing is the
One,
Who if He wills, shall give you better than that (which they
mentioned), gardens down where rivers flow
and shall assign
mansions for you (in Paradise). |
|
11- |
But they even deny and call the Hour
(Time of Resurrection) a lie,
and for those who call the Hour a lie, We have
arranged a flaming blaze (of Hell). |
|
12- |
When it sees them (becomes visible to them) from a
far place and distance, they will hear its raging and its
roaring. |
|
13- |
And when they are thrown, bound together (in
chains),
into a narrow place of it (the Hell),
they will call and pray then and there for
their extinction. |
|
14- |
(But they will be told:) “Do not pray
today for one single time extinction, but pray for many
extinctions”. |
|
15- |
Say (to them, O Muhammad):
“Is this
misery better or the everlasting Paradise which has been
promised to God-conscious, pious people
as their reward and as
their final destination?”. |
|
16- |
For them, there will be there whatever
they desire, while staying there forever.
It is a promise to be
fulfilled by your Lord and worth praying for. |
|
17- |
And on the day when He will gather them
together and whatever they worship other than God, He will then
say:
“Was it you who misled these My creatures or did they by
themselves strayed from the right path?” |
|
18- |
They will respond saying: “All Glory are
Yours,
it was not proper for us to assume and take guardians
besides You,
but You gave them and their forefathers to enjoy
the pleasures of life
till they forgot all remembrance of Yours and
the Message
and they were a corrupt, mindless and lost people”. |
|
|
19- |
(Thereupon God will say:)
“So they (the
false gods which you prayed to and accused them of misleading
you,) rejected and belied what you
(the idol
worshippers and worshippers of other than God) are saying.
So now you can
neither ward off your punishment,
nor get any help,
and whoever
among you committed such evil and wrong (worshipping other than
God),
We shall make him taste a grave suffering”. |
|
20- |
And We never sent before you (Muhammad)
any of the Messengers but that of course they ate food and
walked in the markets.
And We let some of you to be means of
testing and trial for others, will you have patience and
perseverance?
And your Lord has always been Observant over all. |
|
21- |
And those who do not expect meeting Us
(on the Resurrection) say:
“Why aren’t angels sent down to us
or why don’t we see our Lord?”
And they presented themselves arrogantly and they expressed a big pride. |
|
|
22- |
The Day they see the angels, there is not
going to be any good news for the habitual sinners
and they (the
angels) will say: “You are being kept off far away from any
blessing”. |
|
23- |
And We shall consider any and all deeds
that they did and make all that like particles of dust,
scattered about. |
|
|
24- |
The inhabitants of the Garden ( of Paradise) at that
time will have real better place of standing
and a much better
place and things to talk about. |
|
25- |
On the Day when the sky
will be split in the clouds of dust and angels will be descending in a grand descent.
|
|
26- |
The Government and Dominion that Day will
rightfully belonging to the Most Gracious God
and that
Day will be a tough one for the disbelievers. |
|
|
27- |
The Day when the unjust person would bite
on his hand, saying:
“What a pity, I wish I had taken the same
route as the Messenger”. |
|
|
28- |
“What a pity, I wish I had not taken so-and-so as intimate friend (who misguided me). |
|
29- |
“He really led me astray from the
Reminder (the Quran) after it had come to me.
And Satan was ever
a humiliating, betraying force towards the mankind”. |
|
30- |
The Messenger (Muhammad) will say:
“O my Lord, my folks deserted this Quran”. (did not act and live
according to the Quran). |
|
31- |
And so has it been that to every prophet,
We made it possible that there would be an enemy from among the
habitual sinners (of his people).
But your Lord is sufficient as
a Guide and a Helper (to the Messenger and the believers). |
|
32- |
And those who deny (the Quran) said:
“Why
was the Quran not sent down to him (Muhammad) all at once, in
one piece?”
(this was so)
In order to reinforce your heart by it, and We revealed it (the
Quran) in stages to you. |
|
33- |
And not with a single comparing opinion do
they come up towards you (Muhammad),
but that (in each instance) We reveal to
you the truth (against their falsehood,) and with the best of
explanation. |
|
|
34- |
Those who will be gathered and dragged to
the Hell on their faces,
they will be in real trouble and
farthest away from the path (to happiness). |
|
35- |
And We indeed gave the Book (the Torah) to
Moses and assigned his brother Aaron as a helper to him. |
|
36- |
And We told them: “Go both of you to the
people who have rejected and called Our Verses and
Messages as lies".
Thereafter (when they persisted in their denial,) We
destroyed them with utter destruction. |
|
37- |
And the people of Noah, When they denied
and called the Messengers liars,
We drowned them and We made
them as a lesson for people
and We have arranged a painful
punishment for unjust people. |
|
|
38- |
Also the people of Aad, Thamud and the
inhabitants of Arras and many generations in between. |
|
|
39- |
And for each of them, We gave example (of
previous folks) and (when they continued their evil deeds,)
We
brought utter ruin to each one of them. |
|
40- |
And indeed they have passed along by the
town (where the Prophet Lot lived,)
which was rained down with
the awful rain (and was destroyed).
Weren’t they (the disbelievers)
looking at it (with their own eyes)?
But (their problem is that)
they do not expect any Resurrection (and so they behave
irresponsibly). |
|
41- |
And when they see you (Muhammad), they
only make fun of you (saying):
“Is this the guy that God raised
up to be a Messenger?” |
|
42- |
“He would definitely have misled us away
from our gods, had it not been that we patiently continued in
worshipping them”.
And when they will see the punishment, they will
know who was most astray from the path (to happiness). |
|
43- |
(O Muhammad) Did you observe well the person
who took his baseless vain desire as his gods? (those obey their
own desires)
Could you
then take care of or defend such a person? |
|
44- |
Or do you suppose that most of them hear
you or understand or use their reasoning?
They are just like
cattle, even farther astray from the path (of happiness).
1 |
|
45- |
Haven’t you observed how your Lord
extends the shadow (in the late afternoon)?
If He had willed, He
could definitely make it stand still.
But We placed the sun such
that it indicates how it (the shadow) will be (and how it will
change). |
|
46- |
Then We take it (the shadow of the energy
and light of the sun) back easily. |
|
|
47- |
And He is the One Who made the night for you as a
covering (from the sun and its heat)
and the sleep for rest and
recuperation and the day, a time for reawakening and activity. |
|
|
48- |
And He is the One Who sends the winds as
a sign of good news of His Mercy (as rain) to come
and We send
clean pure water from the sky, |
|
49- |
To bring back to life dead (dry) land and
by that (rain) We give drinking water to animals,
cattle and
people that We have created, in large numbers. |
|
50- |
And We have made it (the water and the
Message) available amongst
them, so that they appreciate (this Grace)
but the majority of
people tend towards ingratitude and lack of appreciation. |
|
51- |
And if We had willed, We would have
raised up a warner in every town. |
|
52- |
So do not obey the disbelievers,
instead strive against them (their disbelief) with utmost effort
(by preaching). |
|
53- |
And He is the One, Who let two seas (two
bodies of water) next
to each other,
this one tasty and sweet and the other salty and
bitter
and He placed an area in between the two with a complete
separation.
2 |
|
54- |
And He is the One, Who created human kind
from water
and designed it in having relatives and family by blood and by
marriage
and your Lord is the Ever Capable Designer.
3 |
|
55- |
And yet they (the astray people) worship,
other than God,
entities which neither can benefit them, nor
harm them
and the disbeliever usually acts against his Lord
(against his Lord's Commandments),
turning his back to his Lord and aiding each other against his
Lord. |
|
56- |
And We did not send you (Muhammad) except
as a bringer of good news (for good people)
and as a warner (to
humankind to behave correctly). |
|
57- |
Say: “I do not ask you for any wage or
reward for this duty,
except wishing that whoever wants, will
find and take a way to his Lord”. |
|
58- |
And fully trust in the Ever Living One
Who never dies and glorify by praising Him in gratitude
and He
is Sufficient as All Knower of the sins of His servants, |
|
59- |
The One Who created the heavens and the
earth and all that is in between them in six periods
and also harmonized the Mighty Dominion of the Universe,
the Most Gracious (God).
Ask Him
(for knowledge and help and mercy) as He is the All Knowing,
All Aware of all. |
|
60- |
And yet when they are asked to prostrate
(their forehead down to earth) for the Most Gracious (God), they say:
“Who is the Most Gracious?
Do we have to prostrate
ourselves to that which you (Muhammad) order us?”
And that
increases even their hatred. |
|
61- |
The source of all blessings is the One,
Who placed the galaxies in the sky
and also placed a great lamp
in it (the sun) and the moon which reflects the light.
4 |
|
62- |
And He is the One Who placed the night
and the day after one another
to give a chance to whomever
decides to remember or desires to be grateful (to his Creator,
Who created all). |
|
63- |
And the good servants of the Most
Gracious God, walk on earth in due humility
and when foolish people
call them (with bad words), they answer peacefully. |
|
64- |
And they spend part of the night in
worship of their Lord,
while prostrating their head on the floor and
while standing. |
|
65- |
And those who say: “Our Lord, please keep
away from us the torment and suffering of Hell.
Its punishment is
really heavy, permanent. |
|
66- |
It is really an awful place to stay or
stand in. |
|
67- |
And those who when they spend (helping others),
they
do not do it in excess, nor are stingy,
but they keep up a medium
way in between those (extremes). |
|
68- |
And those who never call in prayer or pray to any other,
along with God,
nor do they kill any person, since God has
forbidden it,
except for just cause (such as in self defense when
brutally attacked),
nor do they commit adultery (engage in illicit sex)
and
whoever commits this, shall receive the due punishment. |
|
69- |
The punishment to that offense will be
doubled for that person on the Day of Resurrection
and that person will stay in
that situation for ever, humiliated and disgraced, |
|
70- |
Except those who repent and believe and
do righteous good works,
then God will change their record of
sins into good deeds (that they did to amend their record)
and
God is Very Forgiving, Most Merciful (to good ones). |
|
71- |
And whoever repents and does good
righteous deeds, then he really is going back to God with all
his existence. |
|
72- |
And those who do not bear witness to
falsehood and untruth,
and when they pass by evil talk or evil play
or nonsense, they pass by with dignity. |
|
73- |
And those who when they are reminded of
the Verses (of the Quran) or the Signs and Miracles of their
Lord,
they do not fall deaf or blind at that. |
|
74- |
And those who say: “Our Lord, please
grant us from our spouses and children, the light and comfort of
our eyes
and make us leaders of the pious people”. |
|
75- |
Those are the ones who will be rewarded
with a high place (in Paradise)
because of their patient
endurance and commitment
and they shall be met there with
greetings and words of peace and respect, |
|
76- |
Staying in there forever.
What a nice
place to stay in and what an excellent standing and status! |
|
77- |
Say: “God will not pay attention or Mercy to you, except if you pray to Him
(for forgiveness).
But then you who have
indeed denied (His call and His Messages) and called them lies,
then the punishment shall be necessary. |

Two large bodies of water, in the area of a wide river delta just

3
More
than 75% of human body is made of water, even though it feels
solid. See also chapter 24 Verse 45.
4
A
miracle of the Quran, since in the time of Muhammad, 1430+ years ago,
no one knew that the moon is not the source of light but only a
reflector- illuminator (monir in Arabic), also the sun as a
lamp, not a reflector of light.
