Divorce - Chapter 65                           |                                 Contains 12 verses – Medina

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful ذ

1-

O Prophet, when you (Muslims) decide to divorce your wives,
you have to divorce them by considering and observing their period and do count the accurate number of days
(since last day of their menstrual period).       1
And be ever so conscious of God, your Lord.
And do not expel them out of their homes, neither should they leave (their husband, or family)
except if they committed an evident illicit sexual act.
And those are the limits set by God and whoever trespasses the limits of God, then does wrong to himself.
You don’t know (the future), may be God will cause some good things to happen after that ordeal.

2-

Then when they reach the end of their waiting-period,
either keep them in good manner or part with them in good manner.
And (in the case of divorce,) two just people from among you (Muslim), have to witness (the divorce,)
and do establish such testimony for God.
This is what anyone who believes in God and the Afterlife, is advised to observe.
And whoever is mindful of God, He will give him (or her) a way out (of trouble and difficulties or unhappiness).

3-

And He will provide him (or her) from sources which he (or her) does not count on.
And whoever trusts in God, then He will suffice him.
Certainly God will make His Command fulfilled.
Indeed God has set a measure and destiny for all matters.

4-

As for those of your women who have already passed the age of monthly periods,
if you have any doubt about it, then their waiting period should be three months (of no sex before any divorce),
as for those who do not have periods,
their waiting period should be the same as mentioned before (three months).
In regards to pregnant ones, their waiting period is till they deliver.
And whoever is mindful of God, He will make his (or her) matter easy for him (or her).

5-

That is the Commandment of God,
which He has sent down to you; and whoever heeds God’s Commandments,
He will cover his (or her) sins away from that person and He will enlarge and make his (or her) rewards great.

6-

Give them lodging from the same or similar lodging, according to your means,
and do not harm them, so as to make life hard on them.
And if they are pregnant, then pay their necessary expenses till they deliver their baby.
And if they (accept to) nurse for your baby, then pay them for that, and communicate with each other nicely.
But if you disagree (about the nursing), then another woman should nurse for the baby.

7-

The rich man should spend from his wealth (for the welfare of the wife and the baby)
and the man whose means are limited, (should pay) from whatever God has given him.
God does not burden any person beyond what He has given him.
Indeed God will grant soon ease after hardship.

8-

And how many a town folks who revolted against the Command of their Lord and His Messengers,
then We called them to a severe accounting and punished them with a horrible torment.

9-

So each town tasted the bad result of its behavior, and the consequence of its behavior was a loss.

10-

God has also prepared for them a severe punishment (in the Afterlife and in this world).
Therefore be mindful of God.
O you people of understanding, who have believed,
God has indeed sent down a Reminder Advice for you (this Quran),

11-

Also a Messenger (Muhammad), who reads the clarifying Verses of God,
so that He would bring those who have believed and have done righteous good deeds,
out of darkness into the light (of guidance).
And whoever believes in God and does righteous good deeds,
He will admit him (or her) into Gardens (of Paradise), down where streams and rivers flow, to stay there forever;
God has indeed granted (already) a nice livelihood for that person.

12-

God is the One, Who has created the seven (seven in Arabic could also mean numerous) heavens
and (as far as the earth is concerned, He created) other earths like them (like other planets),
His (Creative) Command comes down among and within them,
so you should know that God has power over all things
and that God indeed controls everything by His Knowledge.

Footnotes

1
Divorce is not allowable before the passing of 3 months since the last menstruation, to be sure that she is not pregnant, while being divorced.
