Prohibition - Chapter 66
| Contains 12 verses – Medina |
|
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
ذ |
|
|
1- |
O you Prophet, why do you forbid (to
yourself) something that God has allowed for you, trying to please
your wives?
Whereas God is Very Forgiving, Most Merciful. |
|
2- |
God indeed has ordered for you to disregard
and denounce your (undue) oaths
(to deprive yourselves from something that God has made lawful).
And (remember) God is your Master and He is the All Knowing, All
Wise. |
|
3- |
Once the Prophet (Muhammad) told a matter in
confidence to one of his wives,
1
but she reported it to another, so God informed him (Muhammad),
so he let part of the story known and avoided telling another
part of it.
Then when he informed her of that, she asked:
“Who informed you of this?”
He said: “the One, Who knows everything and is All Aware. |
|
|
4- |
If you two (wives of the Prophet, Aisha and
Hafsah) turn in repentance to God (it will be better for you),
since your hearth have indeed deviated (against the Prophet).
And if the two of you backup each other against him (the
Prophet),
then (you should know) that God is his Protector and Gabriel and
the righteous believers as well,
in addition, the angels will be his helpers. |
|
5- |
It may be that his Lord, if he divorces you,
will give him instead of you, wives better than you,
who are Muslims, believers, obedient (to God), turning to God for
forgiveness, sincere servants of God, worshipping Him,
emigrants for the sake of God (means also observing fasting),
previously married or virgins. |
|
6- |
O you who believed, (try to) keep yourselves
and your families aware from the Fire (of Hell),
whose fuel is people (by their own wrong doings)
and stones (which they worship, such as idols, precious metals-
stones),
over which there will be angels, very strict and severe,
who do not disobey God what He ordered them to do
and they do what they are ordered to do (God’s Will). |
|
7- |
(On Judgment Day, they will be told:)
“O you who denied the truth (on earth), now, don’t make any
excuses on this Day (of Judgment).
Of course you will be given back what you used to do". |
|
8- |
O you who have believed, turn to God with a
sincere repentance.
May be God will cover away your sins from you and admit you into
Gardens of Paradise,
down where rivers and streams flow, that will be the Day that
God will not humiliate the Prophet (Muhammad)
and those who have believed with him; their light will be before
them and in their right hands, saying:
“Our Lord, please make our light perfect for us and
forgive us (for our shortcomings and sins).
You are truly Capable and Determinant over all things. |
|
|
9- |
O you Prophet (Muhammad), strive hard against
the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be strict against them;
and (they should know that) their homes will be Hell.
And what an awful destination. |
|
10- |
As an example of disbelieving persons, God
mentions the example of the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot,
who were under the (household) of two of our righteous servants,
but then they (the two women) betrayed (their husbands),
who then could not be protected at all by them (by the two
Prophets, who could not help or protect them)
from the punishment of God,
and they (the two wives), will be told: “Enter the Fire (of
Hell) along with those who enter it”. |
|
11- |
Also as an example of the believing persons,
God gives the example of the wife of the Pharaoh,
when she said: “O my Lord, please build me a home by Your Mercy
and Majesty in the Garden (of Paradise)
and rescue me from the Pharaoh and his action and save me from
the wrong doing people”. |
|
12- |
And the example of Mary, the daughter of
Imran, who guarded her chastity,
We then inspired from Our Spirit into him (her son Jesus),
2
and she confirmed the truth of the Words of her Lord and His
Scriptures
and she was one of the obedient (servants of God).

1
To unite the tribes, the
Prophet had to accept as wives, when an older man such as Abubaker
or others, offered him their daughters. To refuse, would have meant
rejection of their daughters and a cause for animosity and bloodshed,
according to the culture of that time. The Prophet mentioned to his
wife Hafsa that he had a drink of honey from his wife Zainab
(daughter of Jahsh). Hafsa told the other wife Aisha, who told the
Prophet that he had a foul smell on his mouth. The Prophet
appreciated good smell and scent, so he took an oath not to drink
honey again. So this part of the chapter 66 refers to the point that
no one should make unlawful or forbidden what God has permitted.
2
God owns all our spirits which He inspires into us in our mother’s
wombs, with which we are born. He takes it away from our bodies at
the moment of our death, for the interval period till the Day of
Resurrection, at which time He places that spirit back into us for the
Everlasting Life in the Hereafter (Paradise or Hell).
