The City - Chapter 90
| Contains 20 verses – Makka |
|
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ
الرَّحِيمِ |
|
|
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful |
|
|
لَا أُقْسِمُ
بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ |
|
|
1- |
I do not swear, consider this city (of Mecca) |
|
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ
بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ |
|
|
2- |
As you are now a free native of this city. |
|
3- |
And consider the father and all which he
produced (and their destinies). |
|
لَقَدْ
خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ |
|
|
4- |
We indeed have created humankind to be in
toil, activity and trial. |
|
أَيَحْسَبُ
أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ |
|
|
5- |
Does he think that no one has any power over
him? |
|
يَقُولُ
أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا |
|
|
6- |
He says: "I wasted a lot of wealth". |
|
أَيَحْسَبُ
أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ |
|
|
7- |
Does he think that no one sees him? |
|
أَلَمْ
نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ |
|
|
8- |
Haven’t We granted him a pair of eyes (to
see)? |
|
9- |
And a tongue and two lips (to speak with), |
|
وَهَدَيْنَاهُ
النَّجْدَيْنِ |
|
|
10- |
And We have shown him the two ways (of good
and evil)? |
|
فَلَا
اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ |
|
|
11- |
But he would not attempt the uphill road to
progress for the future. |
|
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ |
|
|
12- |
And what is your understanding of “the uphill
road to progress”? |
|
13- |
It is the freeing of a slave, |
|
أَوْ
إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ |
|
|
14- |
Or feeding the hungry in a day and time of
famine, |
|
15- |
Or (feeding and) helping an orphan, near of kin, |
|
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
|
|
|
16- |
Or (feeding and helping) a poor person, who is lying in the dust. |
|
ثُمَّ كَانَ
مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا
بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ |
|
|
17- |
Also being of those who have believed and
urge one another to patience and also to compassion and
kindness. |
|
أُوْلَئِكَ
أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ |
|
|
18- |
They are the companions of the righteous, (with
their records of deed in their right hand side who enter the
Paradise). |
|
وَالَّذِينَ
كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ |
|
|
19- |
But those who deny and reject Our Verses,
they are the companions of the left
(who are in distress, because of their evil deeds),
with their records of deeds on the left (wrong) hand side. |
|
عَلَيْهِمْ
نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ |
|
|
20- |
Upon them, will be an enveloping Fire (with
no exit). |
